5 things to look for in a running stroller
1. Large Wheels:
Strollers, especially running with large, air filled tyres are easier to push and more comfortable for your baby over many different terrains. Swivel wheels are easy to maneuver through most any crowd or street. They are great for walking, exercise or light running. Fixed wheels on the other hand are great if you want to run a little faster, longer distances or have lots of hills. Larger wheels, when combined with suspension, like what is found on a BOB Ironman, BOB Revolution or Schwinn Free Wheeler provide great performance and a smooth ride. For outings on rough terrain like dirt trails or streets filled with pot holes we recommend the BOB Sport Utility Stroller as it has 16″ tires to actually grab the surface you are pushing it on. If you are looking for something to work out behind on many different terrains the BOB Revolution SE or Baby Jogger Summit XC would be great choices with large rear wheels. For strolling or very short jogs we recommend the Baby Jogger City Elite.
Just keep in mind, “The larger the wheel the easier to push”
2. Shock Absorption:
Running strollers with shock absorption are great to run behind. When pushing a stroller with shocks you know that both you and your baby are getting the smoothest ride possible, especially if the suspension system is adjustable like the BOB Ironman and BOB Revolution SE. Not everyone will need shocks on their stroller. Here are a few things to consider when purchasing a stroller with shocks:
* Will you be using your stroller predomantly for running
* Will you be using your stroller on uneven roads or sidewalks
* Will you be using your stroller on trails or off-road terrain
If you answered “yes” to any of the above you will want a stroller with a suspension system. The shocks will absorb the energy created by bumps and dips in the road therefore providing a smoother ride for baby. A few strollers we would recommend: BOB Revolution SE, BOB Ironman.
3. Infant Car Seat Compatibility:
This is a very important decision. What often happens is that parents will fall in love with an infant seat and cannot find an adapter to make their stroller into a “travel system”. It is great news then that the 2011 BOB Ironman and BOB Revolution SE both now have an in-built Accessory Adapter making it quick and simple to intergrate with your BOB Infant Car Seat and transform your stroller into a complete travel system.
Why is this information so important? If your stroller has a car seat adapter you can bring your new baby out immediately. Most stroller manufacturers recommend that you wait until your infant is 6 to 8 weeks old for any kind of walking exercise, and wait 6 months for running. Please always check with your health professional first.
4. Large Sun Hood Canopy:
With the sun’s harmful rays you want to make sure your little one is protected from the sun. Even on cloudy days little one can be sunburned, so a large sun hood is recommended. You may like the BOB Revolution SE with it’s great oversize canopy. If that is still not enough sun coverage for you then most stroller companies also offer a separate sun shield to help block the UVA rays.
5. Easy Fold:
Look for a stroller that is easy to fold and store in your trunk. Getting your stroller open should be easy as well. You do not want a stroller that you have to take apart every time you go somewhere. You will find it stays set up in the garage for local running or walking, or worse yet, you end up buying a new one. You may like a BOB stroller with their easy two-step folding mechanism.
